Collection Development and Maintenance

Goal I: Leadership and Innovation

Students are innovative, ethical problem-solvers able to lead and manage through communication.

I.a. Students are able to evaluate critically, reflect, and problem solve individually as well as collaboratively.

What I found most helpful were the Collection Development group assignments: 1) Needs Assessment 2) Policy, 3) Action Plan and 4) Selections.  It really made me feel I was working in a real library world environment and my team members were my colleagues even though our library was a fictional library!  Most of all the group assignments build upon each other so we could see the progression of what a Collection Development process looks like.

The below artifacts were based on a special library attempting to address the changing needs of the community.

Artifact #1

My group developed a needs assessment that analyzed library statistic, reviewing demographics, and obtaining feedback through community surveys.

Collection Development Needs Assessment

Artifact #2

My group developed a collection development policy based on a collection development assessment that will help shape and inform services and future collections. We created an evaluation criteria based on user need and quality of materials as well assessing budgeting and funding for the operations, acquisitions, and programing. Other elements of the policy included weeding and collection maintenance.

Collection Development Policy

Artifact #3

We learned the importance of creating a collection development action plan. For our special library, we developed an action plan to enhance the Juvenile collection by reviewing the selections and communicating the goals.
